From my studio to your home - all the drumming knowledge you'll ever need.

Welcome, and thanks for stopping by my site. I’m guessing that you, or someone dear to you is slightly nuts about the drums, right? Phew! So, it’s not just me then!

As a working professional drummer of nearly 30 years, as you can imagine, I’ve picked up a thing or two from some of those experiences.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with many international artists from all over the world, and study with some incredible teachers too, notably one of the world’s greatest educators Bob Armstrong - for ten years!

This website is a culmination of all of those experiences. Every gig, every tour, every TV and radio show, every album recording, and every lesson I ever taught to anybody, anywhere.

It’s all here, in each and every video lesson that you’ll find on this site – I give it all to you.

A career drummer.

From the school concert to the Albert Hall, it all started with a pair of sticks, a practice pad, and a whole lotta practice.

A pair of sticks & a practice pad

It all started for me with a pair of sticks and my dad’s old practice pad. Rock hard, zero rebound, and an ear splitting “crack” every time you hit it, nothing like the super spongy and near silent pads of today’s offerings. My dad taught me the value of understanding drum rudiments, and how much they had to offer. Then one day I saw a clip of a guy called Buddy Rich – and everything changed.

A good education

I was lucky enough to get to see Buddy Rich as a child when my dad took me to see him in the UK, the experience was life changing. I realised that a worn-out practice pad, and a ripped copy of Buddy Rich’s snare drum rudiments book wasn’t going to cut it, and I needed to get myself some drum lessons if I was going to make a career out of this, or at least get any good at it.

I auditioned, and was excepted into Drumtech percussion school in London, and spent the next year there, studying intensely, and full time. Studying with such incredible teachers such as Francis Seriau and Paul Elliott every day, was a once in a lifetime experience, and I loved every minute of it.

Making a name for myself

After leaving music college, it was time to get out my comfort zone, and into my car, as I drove around for what seemed like years playing small and medium sized gigs in pubs, clubs and bars, peoples back gardens or anywhere that anyone would allow me to set up my drums.

I got to know people, made connections, and gradually the gigs became better, the opportunities began to come, and step by step I was forging a career in London, as dare I say it, a professional drummer. And then I met Bob.

Learning from a master

There was one name that came up time and time again amongst drummers - Bob Armstrong. After a long time on his waiting list, out of the blue one day I got a call saying he had a slot for me, for lessons.

What Bob taught me over the next ten years was simply game changing, and to say that he transformed me as a drummer completely, would be something of an understatement – he rebuilt me, from the ground up, like never before, and on a whole new level. I owe so much to that man as amusician, and his voice echoes round my head almost every time I pick up a pair of sticks to this day.

Hey Julian, ever played for anyone famous?

From opening for Elton John with a drum solo at the Albert Hall, to playing the classic “Me & Mrs Jones with Billy Paul, I’ve been blessed with some incredible experiences in my playing career. It’s a dreamcome true to do what you love for a living, and I don’t regret a single minute.

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to perform live at some of the most prestigious venues around the world, with artists such as Mark Owen (Take That), Peter Andre, Marianne Faithful, Ola Onabule, Sophie Ellis Bextor and many more - but I don't like to talk about it of course!

From Ronnie Scott’s and TheAlbert Hall, to the studios of the BBC for Top of The Pops or Radio 2 shows, I found myself in some amazing places, frequently mingling with some very well-knownpeople. When we get to meet, I might even tell you my disastrous David Beckham fan boy story to break the ice!

The power of education

From colleges and schools, to over 20 years of private tuition, and hundreds of pupils, I've had the good fortune to teach in some outstanding teaching facilities, working with children & adults of all ages and abilities, from complete beginner drummers to professionals.

Drawing on years of experience as a pro drummer and teacher, nothing satisfies me more than watching pupils flourish under my tuition.

Every Jules Drums lesson is born out of these experiences, and years of honing my teaching method, to help every pupil achieve their full potential on the instrument. They represent the distillation of my collective knowledge on the drums as a whole.

Every gig, every tour, every TV and radio show, every album recording, and every drum lesson I ever taught to anybody, anywhere. It’s all in here, and I give it all to you. Will you be part of my next chapter?
